Promotional video for ACMI | Directed by Ally Chau & Biya Shin

3D animation by Ally Chau | 2D animation by Biya Shin

Behind the Scenes

Animatic

I first created the 3D animatic with the timing and placement of the final work in mind, then handed over to Biya, who drew the 2D roughs on top. After we were happy with the result, we worked on the 2D and 3D parts separately, ensuring it fit with the animatic we created, then compiled the two in After Effects for the final result.

Materials

To make sure the 3D elements complemented the 2D animation, I used a unique stippling material with a gradation of the vibrant colours associated with ACMI’s “Story of the Moving Image” permanent exhibition. This low-poly cartoony style created a wonderful backdrop for Biya’s dynamic morphing animation.

Compositing

While most of the 2D and 3D elements were rendered separately and combined in After Effects, this camera screen was drawn and put into 3D so I could parent it to the mesh instead of having to do motion tracking in After Effects. It was very fun to work with Biya and fine-tune little elements together like this.

Created at the RMIT Bachelor of Design (Animation & Interactive Media) course, under the guidance of animator Scarlet Sykes Hesterman and Field Carr, who is part of the ACMI’s in-house video team.
