Storyboard & Notes
The quick storyboard I drew in my sketchbook ended up closely resembling what happens in the final film. I also wrote notes on 3D settings while I was working on the project to keep things consistent across the scene files.
Butterfly Turnaround
The butterfly’s mesh itself is relatively simple. For the wings, I used a photo of butterfly wings and generated normal and opacity maps and made them translucent so they could reflect light. Fur was strategically placed on the thorax so I could hide the meeting point of the legs.
Compositing
Lighting played a key part in creating the mood for the film. Because it was so dark, I could get away with not putting details into areas that were not going to be visible. For this scene, I used a spotlight to light up the character and only generated a patch of grass where the light was hitting. The background is a black png mask of trees with transparent areas. A light was placed behind it with slight fog animation for an atmospheric effect.
